A woman in Melbourne's West Australian city of Melbourne has been fined $25,000 for selling Viagra, a prescription drug for the treatment of low libido, after her doctor ordered the use of Viagra to improve her sexual performance. An Australian sexual health specialist at the University of Melbourne's School of Medicine and Health, Dr David Lasseter said this was an alarming situation for many men seeking treatment for low libido.
The woman was taking sildenafil (generic Viagra) and was found to have low blood pressure. The prescription drug was not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of low sexual desire but was prescribed to women for the treatment of low blood pressure, he said.
"We had an idea that we were going to be using Viagra on women and that they would have a lower blood pressure. I thought that was not the problem, but we were trying to do something about it," said Lasseter, who also treated female sexual dysfunction in the past. "We thought the drug would be helpful for female sexual dysfunction, and we thought it would be a good idea for women and men to use it. I thought, well, there's a lot of good women in the market."
According to the Australian Medical Association, female sexual dysfunction is the inability to get and maintain an erection and it can be caused by various medical conditions. Men with a low blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and certain cancers often do not get enough blood pressure control. "If you're having a sexual problem, there's not enough blood pressure," said the association.
Viagra, or the Sildenafil Citrate (generic Viagra), is a prescription medicine for the treatment of low blood pressure. It is available in several strengths, ranging from 25mg to 100mg. The tablets are taken 1 to 3 times a day, approximately every 6 to 8 hours for men and every 4 to 6 hours for women. Men taking Viagra also take the drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, or erectile dysfunction not to be treated with sildenafil. A doctor will need to conduct a blood test before and during treatment to make sure the drug is not safe for use.
The doctor will then order an MRI scan of the penis to check for a blood flow problem.
While Viagra is not recommended for women, Lasseter said the drug can help women get pregnant too, or a mother can use it if the mother has a pre-existing condition. In women, the drug can be used for treating low libido or to treat low sexual desire or to relieve a condition that is common in women.
Viagra is not approved for use in women and can only be taken under the supervision of a doctor. "A doctor will only prescribe Viagra for women," Lasseter said. "Men should take it for the treatment of low blood pressure or other low blood pressure.
